Ch. 1 - Dusty Canvas - Those who will live (Hitori age 5)
“Wherever you will go, I will let you down, But this lullaby goes on.”
His earliest memories were bleak. An overloaded refuge with double its capacity; a crumbling roof full of holes and nests for small rodents and birds; glassless windows which always ensured a huddled uncomfortable mass of body heat during storms and the snowing season... Hitori hated storms, although perhaps the worst memory was the starvation. It's an unimaginable feeling to starve. It's as if your stomach tries to desperately consume itself to nourish your fleshless, skeletal body.
Hitori had lived at the refuge for as long as he could remember. He made no friends and had no family. He was very much alone. A pathetic life of so many. Hitori was just a part of the flock, sort of. Although he would blend right in from an outsider's perspective, he did everything but that within his humble little group of homeless war refugees. The rest of this flock came in groups... mother and child, a group of friends from the same village, all together, except for Hitori. When the starvation kicked in, it slowly became clear that not everyone would be able to eat.
Friends are very supportive of one another in these times of need, as are mothers nurturing of their children. It is those who are alone that struggle with survival. Hitori was one such person. The little food there was was distributed unfairly to families and larger groups, leaving the weak and forgotten to starve. The worst aspect of the worst memory? They knew they would starve and die.
The other refugees would avoid him, let alone share any food or comfort with him. Hitori tried to make friends with the wildlife in a desperate attempt at being social, communicating... showing affection. Of course, it would never work. He was a grubby human child with a pointlessly self-aware mind. He had might as well try to speak with the trees.
He had also spoken with a broken mirror, wanting to believe his reflection was another person, possibly a brother. He could have sworn his reflection would move too. If he stared hard enough, he thought he could see the corners of his mouth curling into a smile, but felt only loneliness when he realised that he himself had smiled. Perhaps subconsciously for the want of a reaction. He had dirty unkempt black hair, and an even dirtier face. Under the dirt however was a soft and round face which was to turn sharp as he grew into a teenager. His truly unique feature was his eyes. Hitori had bright, yellow eyes. He often wondered if people could see them in the dark. Besides from his face, his body was unremarkable. He was thin and weak, his starvation worsening his already pathetic body. He had a very feint birthmark on his stomach.
It was after two days of not eating that Hitori felt the bare necessity of hunting for his food to survive. Although he was a mere skeletal five year old boy with barely enough strength to carry his own weight, he saw what happened to those who gave up. He understood why they gave up, too. The thought came to him many times. Nothing would change, the world would keep turning. But Hitori was a particular coward who feared death more than starving. Hitori desperately attempted to catch wildlife; the small meatless rabbits that plagued the area proved to be ten times as dexterous than him. Cursing his luck, Hitori even tried to eat grass and dirt. He almost convinced himself it tasted good, too. This time of hopelessness and relentless starvation was probably the first in which Hitori first heard the voice speak to him. A tiny voice, so feint in fact that Hitori doubted it altogether, but the second time he was certain. He had thought of a way to catch a rabbit. Hitori scanned the familiar wild terrain in his surroundings for a lengthy piece of vine he had seen earlier. It took a while, but he found it. And right next to it was a jagged piece of rock, that for some reason made sense to him that it would be useful, too.
Hitori cleared a small area infront of two close trees. He felt that this was the right area to work with. He pulled at a small root with his weak, exhausted arms for what seemed like hours before it finally broke free from the hard earth. He pulled it back and attached the vine he had found tightly, wrapping it around another nearby root. Hitori then wrapped the rest of the vine around the rock. For some reason, he knew this particular contraption was dangerous, and carefully stepped back. He threw some leaves gently over the dirt clearing and watched, expectantly. Disappointed that there was no immediate food-producing result, he realised that he, of course, would have to leave and wait a couple of hours before it'd work. And he did. Hitori made his way back to the collapsing refuge building.
It was amazing how many people could die in the span of six hours from simple starvation. Hitori had forgotten the stink of the place and was only reminded from his trip into the woods. Feeling his stomach lurch and twist, Hitori impatiently hurried back to the woods where his contraption awaited. He was not disappointed.
A rabbit had attempted to run through the small clearing between the trees and had set the trap off. The remains of its head were splattered on a tree, the sharp rock embedded deeply in its skull. Although quite a gruesome image for most children, this sight only meant one thing to Hitori. He was going to eat. Finally.
It was the single most glorious moment in his life, and the most sickening, and for some reason the most miserable. Hitori took a life so that he could live for a few more days. He never shared. He watched others die while knowing that he ate. He could remember his hysterical sobbing as he ate, unsure whether it was from happiness or despair. His consumption of the meat physically hurt. The silver lining turned out to be fake. He learnt something that day which always stuck with him.
Despite the gloom and never ending despair which seemed to breed in that place, the new found genius of setting traps and hunting for food was a vital skill, Hitori found. He continued his hunt every day, and eventually had a farm of traps laid out in the woods. He would never starve. He would never die like the rest. He was a warrior, and he would strive in the face of despair.
At the time, it had never occurred to Hitori that the thoughts were not his own.
Ch. 2 - Throw away the past - Forgotten mistakes (Before birth)
"The righteous move forward, clean hands become stronger, but mine are rotten flesh, I can stay here no longer."
It was never meant to be this way for him. Jakuren and Hitoko had always dreamed of the ideal married life. Jakuren met Hitoko when he was a chunnin from Konoha during a mission. It of course was forbidden to indulge in such ways while on duty, he couldn't resist talking to her. She worked at an inn with her mother in a small remote village. They had hired shinobi from Konoha the first time he met her, however found excuses to visit every time thereon. He wasn't sure why he was so taken with her, whether it was for her long dark hair, kind smile, of characteristically bright yellow eyes.
He found himself trying to impress her every time he saw her, which always resulted him in embarrassing himself in some way. He wasn't the most refined person, and his idea of how to impress woman was very off. Nevertheless, Hitoko found his attempts at impressing her humorous, charming and adorable, and was more than fond of him.
Jakuren was never the romantic type and found their relationship very awkward, but enjoyable (though he'd never admit it). It was on his promotion to Jounin when he proposed to Hitoko. She of course said yes, and the two became happily married. Jakuren didn't invite any of his friends from Konoha, though, which confused Hitoko somewhat as he lived the majority of his life there.
Truth was that Jakuren didn't tell any of his colleagues or friends about his relationship, as the life of a shinobi is dangerous and marrying someone... well, weak, can be multiply the danger tenfold. For instance, the knowledge of loved ones, can instigate a hostage situation which can otherwise be avoidable. It was for this reason, paired with the fact that most of Jakuren's friends would make fun of him for getting married, that he kept the relationship a secret. He made up poor excuses whenever he left the village to see his love for a prolonged amount of time, however his promotion to Jounin meant he would have less time to spend with Hitoko.
Jakuren had saved plenty of money as a jounin and could purchase a home for them in Hitoko's hometown. His reputation grew as both a killed taijutsuist and fuuinjutsuist, it was said he was unrivalled by many. Although Hitoko was sad to think that she wasn't providing much for either of them, Jakuren reassured her with his own unique charismatic charm and bought one anyway. It wasn't enormous, just enough for the two of them with a guest room, even though they would most certainly never have a guest. The extra room came in handy, though, when Hitoko fell pregnant.
Jakuren was uncertain. He was going to be a father, but he had no idea how to do it, or what to do. To be honest with himself, he was just not ready for fatherhood, but being the kind of guy that he was, he promised himself to Hitoko and would adapt his life if need be. Eventually he was excited and nervous to be a father. He wondered what kind he would be; his own was also a shinobi though mostly kept to himself.
As Jakuren's new married life persisted his attempts of keeping it secret slowly deteriorated until most Konoha shinobi knew he was married. Though his child was still a secret to Konoha. Jakuren preferred that his son grew to be a commoner rather than pursue the life of a shinobi and took comfort in the thought of his son or daughter playing with other children and growing without knowing to kill. Jakuren felt tranquil when he was with Hitoko and their unborn child.
Months went by as the life in Hitoko's belly swelled. Jakuren took extra missions to support his new family with the financial needs that his son would no doubt benefit from when he grew. Jakuren never wanted his children to feel hungry. He made a large sum of money for a shinobi; an enormous amount when considered by a commoner. His missions were often simple and dull, however his last would finalise his fate for the next two decades.
It started as a simple B-Rank escort mission in which Jakuren was to single handedly lead a prominent Sunagakure businessman through Fire Country into wave country while ensuring his safety. During his travels Jakuren and the man who oddly chose to wear dark, thick clothing despite the summer heat, had spoken at great length. Jakuren could always speak well with men. This man, although unusual, seemed very kind. More importantly, he had said that he was a father, and Jakuren wanted to feel out how he went about his fatherly business. Jakuren even indulged information regarding his personal life to this stranger, a first time for him. The last time too.
They spoke at great lengths about relationships, wives and children. For some reason he wasn't quite ready to admit to another that he was going to be a father. He could barely believe it himself. He did however share in the stories of struggle to gain enough financial stability to support a married life, explaining how he his relief wasn't too far away, almost having enough money to completely pay off the house. The heavily clothed man laughed, for some reason finding his own lack of money boast-worthy. He joked how the shinobi he hires always rob him from his money in some way or the other.
Once he had flawlessly completed the escort mission, Jakuren returned to Konohagakure for his debrief and payment. He left almost immediately to return to his wife. He had never thought that he could be capable of such commitment to another. He had found himself thinking about her endlessly throughout the day and couldn't wait to see her face, her smile, her dark hair and piercing yellow eyes. It was never meant to be this way for him.
Jakuren returned to a plundered and molested home. The windows shattered, possessions stolen or broken, his fortune robbed, but the only thing that broke him was his lifeless wife. She laid on the floor in a pool of blood. Jakuren clung to her body, caressing her head as he tried to grasp the reality of the situation.
It was never meant to be this way.
He gently brushes Hitoko's cheek with the back of his shaking hand. A tear dropped on her face. His own grief and sorrow. This was the cost of sharing a life with a commoner.
It was never meant to be.
A soft cry sounded; an honest and true echo isolated in the tainted room. It was not Jakuren.
Ch. 3 - Five years later - Hitori the lone wolf (Hitori age 10)
"With no light to guide us, the purposeless will wander, to have no direction, still, we strive onward."
The conditions were the same as five years ago, however the circumstances had changed. Hitori had hardened his body and soul from desperation of survival. He saw people die. He smelled the weak rot and feed the worms. He watched the worms feed the earth. He heard the earth feed the wildlife. He tasted the rabbits feed his hunger.
His miserable, food and affection deprived childhood continued relentlessly, though he did not give up. His natural instincts had grown and developed, his thoughts were genius for a child his age. He knew to survive. He lived to survive. Although the refuge was very much the same, the children, elderly and women were not as starving as five years ago. It was thanks to Hitori's hunting skills. He had set up a farm of traps in the woods for rabbits and other life which provided enough meat to feed many living in the refuge. Not all, but many.
Still he grew, and still Hitori wanted more. His life as a shinobi would begin, little did he know. It was when a trap of his bit off more than it could chew. During his usual routine of collecting the trapped wildlife, Hitori was deafened by a shaking roar. Soon following a giant paw clubbed him over the head, full knocking Hitori over. His arm had broken so easily. He rolled over as instinct dictated and narrowly avoided another paw to the head, this one no doubt would have crushed his skull. He then stared up at the colossal bear.
It stood twelve feet high, almost three times as tall as the young boy. Hitori could only marvel at this bears features. It's hair was padded down thick with mud and blood. It's teeth were savage and sharp, the claws much the same. What he had noticed first however was the bear's anger. It was attacking him unprovoked. Hitori then noticed the second clue. The blood. It finally occurred to him that this bear must have activated Hitori's trap. By the looks of how much blood there was, it likely set off a few of them.
Hitori sized up the bear as his active mind kicked in. The bear was injured and likely slow. It was angry and would no doubt continue to attack with its relentless and mindless barrage of heavy claws. Hitori had no chance other than to run. As he came to this conclusion, he rolled over- again narrowly avoiding another claw to the head, then took off at a sprinting pace, the heavy thumps of the bear's clumsily pursuit shadowing him.
He could feel the bear's hunt and bloodthirst, he himself feeling adrenaline and excitement- oddly. Hitori's genius kicked in again as he diverted his course. He ducked and weaved behind trees to gain a distance from the bear. He knew the terrain well as did the bear- but what the beast didn't know was where Hitori had placed his traps.
The first few had either already caught prey or was set off by the bear, though his traps were many. Despite the distance he put between himself and the bear, it's endurance was bottomless and Hitori's fatigue was fading. Still, he strived onward. He rounded narrowly behind a tree and saw his first armed trap. As he leapt over it and ran, Hitori chanced a look over his shoulder to see the bear receive a sharp rock stab into its leg. It charged forward at him angrily.
Hitori feinted a movement and slipped behind another tree. The bear soon followed again with much the same speed, to Hitori's great disappointment. He moved towards his next trap, hoping it would still be armed. It was. He once again leapt over the trap and turned his head again. The bear was much closer to him than he thought. He saw the trap slam a jagged rock into the bear's leg once more. His speed was wearing thin.
Hitori moved on, the bear still following, albeit slower and limping. His last trap and the most recently placed was nearby. He neared the familiar area and searched the area vigilantly for the trap. As he turned a tree, Hitori heard a snap followed by a sharp and deep pain in his thigh. He had found the last trap- or it had found him. He collapsed to the ground, rock still embedded in his leg as he looked up at the terrifying beast approaching. Its face was of course expressionless, it was a bear after all, but Hitori felt that it had a triumphant look on its face.
He looked around. There was no escape this time. He looked around some more. There were no sticks nearby. He looked at the bear approaching. Only a few seconds away. He looked around, then to his leg. Instinct drove his actions again as Hitori grabbed the rock in his leg, tore it out with a groan and pressed it forward to the bear as it closed in on him. It went straight into its eye. Blood and black goo dripped down Hitori's arms from the bears face. The beast roared in fury before turning and running. He had won.
Hitori threw the rock down and allowed himself a sigh of relief. There was still the problem of his leg, though he had suffered and endured through much worse. He took off his dirty, poor excuse for a shirt and wrapped it tightly around his injured leg, wincing all the while. He heard a snicker behind him. Really close behind him. In fact, he felt the warm breath on his ear. The bear still in mind, Hitori pushed himself forward and tumbled over to face the music.
Knelt down infront of him was a woman, roughly in her twenties. She wore a wide grin and was chewing on some sort of food. Her clothes were dark, a sword strapped to her back, and a headband around her neck. This was the first time Hitori had encountered a shinobi- or so the first time he remembered.
The woman's name was Saki. She helped Hitori by cleaning his injury and bandaging it for him, all the while teasing him, he felt. She also carried him back to his home before insulting its state and his poor life style. Her next words lingered in Hitori's mind for a long while after the incident.
"You should become a shinobi."
He hated the thought at first. Shinobi had no honour. He didn't know why he thought this way. Shinobi were sneaky fools. Why did he think this way? Shinobi only breed further destruction. These thoughts were alien.
Regardless, once his injuries had healed Hitori eventually found himself packing his belongings, which were sadly few and took little time, and headed to Kirigakure where he might enrol as an academy student. The village was enormous in comparison to the refuge. There were so many people; big, strong people. Hitori was once again an ant among trees. It took him several hours of searching, however he eventually found the academy.
He entered the enormous building confidently. From all the ten year old boys he knew, Hitori was surely the strongest. He was quickly disappointed. The other students were so skilled. They were strong, quick, knew how to use chakra and had already been in fights before. Hitori stood no chance.
His first few weeks in the academy he planned to lay low, however it was quickly discovered how weak he was. The other students picked on him, beat him, and isolated him. Still, he strove onwards.
Ch. 4 - My voice, my guardian, my saviour. (Hitori age 11)
"Only when we fall can we stand up, but when my body is broken and unable, your strength will drive me, my Voice, my Guardian, my Saviour."
A whole year flew by as Hitori struggled through the year in Kirigakure's shinobi academy. He was often covered in bruises and abrasions, more often than not. He was hard, however. His soul would not break. He endured through starvation and poverty, and saw people die. Hitori would not break. It was his greatest strength. His past hardened his endurance and survivability.
He was much weaker than the other genin, having little knowledge of how to use jutsu, and he himself very weak in strength and clumsy in speed, all of which he needed to improve upon if he wanted to graduate from the academy. The exams were weeks away, and Hitori hadn't mastered all his jutsu. He would practise alone in the woods where no one could ridicule him for his pathetic attempts at shinobi art.
Despite his constant training, Hitori was not progressing. It worried him greatly, as he knew that the graduation test was upcoming, and he did not want to fail again, to have to endure another gruelling year as the punching bag. Hitori trained his body and his strength, somewhat, in preparation for the test. He had heard they were brutal. He was not wrong.
A week prior to the graduation test, the academy instructor informed them of the test. It had very little theory. A lot was an understatement when it came to the need of physical strength for the exam. It was something of a tournament, except a free for all melee. This meant that the strongest would win. Each individual would be watched carefully, however this did not comfort Hitori. It was a free for all. It might as well have meant that the entire academy would team up against Hitori, as he knew they would.
He was not wrong.
The test was to take place outside the village, in a place with plenty of varying terrain. This was his only comfort. He trained hard the last few days before the test and yet was still far from ready by the time the sun dawned. Hitori's dread worsened at every passing second, however as sure as time, he found himself lined up with the other academy students. He was sure he saw many of them whisper to each other as he walked past, casting him wicked smirks. It was not comforting.
He listened to the instructor, though the words were muddled and went out through the other ear. He was expecting to be brutally murdered. It had occurred to him then. Almost six years had passed since he first taught himself how to survive from starvation. He remembered what drove his instincts. He was scared. He still was scared. Death was terrifying.
The academy students were then spread out to allocated starting points. Hitori could not see anyone at his current location. His breathing slowed as he felt his heart pound in his chest. He saw the red flare in the sky, and probably heard it too. His instinct kicked in. Hitori had to hide.
He sped into the depths of the forest, occasionally hearing distant commotion from his competitors. He climbed high into a tree and tossed a cloth blanket over himself, performing a simple academy jutsu, the first he learnt, to hide. This had come in useful many times before. Minutes passed before Hitori heard the commotion grow and draw into his direction. He could hear loud agitated conversation. Eventually there was fighting. They must have given up on the search.
Hitori waited for what seemed hours before the fighting slowed to a still. He cautiously clambered down the tree to find the grounds scorched with the occasional pool of blood here and there. Wondering if he was the last standing, he began to walk to the edge of the forest. As he drew closer he heard commotion grow. The last standing were fighting still, mainly using swords. His gut wrenched as he realised he may still have to fight. He then heard a feint whistle grow loud from behind him.
Instinct kicked in.
Hitori ducked and rolled just in time to see a kunai spit through the air where his head was moments ago. He could see someone approach from behind. It was one of the larger academy students, a big stupid grin on his face. This reminded Hitori of the time with the bear. He had no traps this time. Hitori could only move out of the forest and into the clearing where the other competitors were. He spotted many abandoned blades and unconscious academy students plaguing the grass.
As he looked around Hitori felt a firm fist slam against his skull. He fell, disoriented. "Stand up. Grab a sword." He thought to himself. Hitori did so, standing slowly, a sway in his stance as he quickly located a nearby sword and ran for it. He heard the larger academy student chuckle. As he held the katana with a hand, he turned to face the academy student. There were now three. They had finally realised he was here and must have decided to finish him quickly. "Your grip is wrong. Two hands." He thought to himself. Hitori quickly adjusted his grip into something that felt oddly familiar and right.
He looked up in time to see the larger academy student approach. The big kid had two swords in either hand, and lashed down at Hitori hard. "Block!" Hitori thought again, raising his own katana in a horizontal pose to catch both blades. His elbows buckled, but he managed to push off the attack and gain a distance. He thought it was strange that he was having these thoughts, however could spare no time to focus on it.
"Attack, now!" He thought and again acted on these alien instincts. Hitori lunged forward and sunk his blade into the academy student's stomach. It wasn't deep and was to the side. however was enough to send him down. He was whimpering and crawling away as the other two approached cautiously.
It took a prolonged amount of awkward uncertain strikes before Hitori clearly had the advantage, to everyone's surprise. He looked around, victorious and confused. For the third time in Hitori's life, he felt relief. There was no applause. He had won, and by rights of Kirigakure's ninja academy, he had guaranteed himself graduation.
His graduation was not as glorious as he had imagined. Other shinobi had relatives and friends clap for them, cheer them on and congratulate them afterwards. When Hitori's name was called, silence ensued followed by the sounds of his soft footsteps, quiet thanks and his return to his seat at the back. He could feel glares of the other academy students.
It was that night when Hitori lay awake in his makeshift bedding consisting of hay and rags where he realised that his thoughts had saved him. The feeling he had when they shot through his head; it was foreign and strange. He had felt a similar shiver at particular points throughout his unlived life; the time when his life was threatened by starvation, or when he was attacked by a bear. This time his life was threatened again. It was that night when Hitori finally realised that the thoughts, his saviour, were not his own.
Ch. 5 - The face behind the voice (Hitori age 14)
”Such is the power, with knowledge and wisdom, our gifts are passed on, such is the power."
It had been three years since Hitori became a genin. Not much had changed. He was still much weaker than the other genin, however was no doubt making gradual progress in his training, thanks to the wisdom behind his thoughts. They plagued his mind by this point, making it difficult for him to concentrate at times and caused a great deal of mental stress and sleep deprivation.
During his earlier years as a genin, Hitori was paired with many other low-strength genin to complete simple D-Rank missions. His first C-Rank mission was a disaster, although he did benefit in hindsight. As per usual he was paired with two genin freshly graduated from the academy. The mission, in which they were to scout a nearby abandoned farm for traps, ended with Hitori suffering a hard blow to the side of his head and another in the stomach. He did not remember this, but the result changed his life.
During his unconsciousness, Hitori could hear a feint low voice speaking to him. It was stern and somewhat comforting. He had heard this before. Initially, he thought that perhaps it was his father, whom he could never remember, but eventually the recognition dawned on him. This was the voice which plagues his mind.
Hitori realised he could see. As he looked around, he realised that he had changed locations. Before he was on a farm, now he was in a stone room with poor lighting. He could barely make out a figure in front of him, the darkness obscuring the form entirely.
A voiced echoed lowly. "We finally meet."
Hitori squinted ahead at the figure, remaining silent. He couldn't move for some reason.
"Silence is perfectly sensible." It spoke with a smile.
Hitori wanted to speak, but his body was frozen. He could not move. The shadow knew it.
"I have been helping you in your times of need. Helping you live. Yet you always throw yourself into danger, Hitori."
Hitori was surprisingly unsurprised.
"My name is Sasaki. I am a jinchuuriki." The man continued, despite Hitori's struggle with speaking, or moving altogether.
What the hell does that mean? He thought to himself.
"Good question. A jinchuuriki is a host to a tailed beast of which is sealed inside of us." The man answered with a smile, noticing Hitori's surprise.
"Well, I am inside your head after all." He explained nonchalantly.
"Ordinarily jinchuriki walk the lands freely, however in my case... My mind and spirit was caught inside of your mother's when she was born, then transferred into you when you were born. She died, see."
This man... Jinchuuriki... Spirit, knew Hitori's past better than he did.
How...? A silence ensued. The man was considering Hitori's question. "How indeed."You don't know? Hitori asked, for once shocked. "Perhaps not."
Hitori felt frustrated. The shadow was messing with him. So you are dead? Hitori asked with little care.
"In a way. My body lies dead by many centuries." He answered.
Hitori would receive nothing from this shadow. He gritted his teeth from frustration.
"In truth, I am surprised to meet you like this. You see I never anticipated your awareness. Though you did throw yourself into plenty of danger, I guess I made myself very known." His grin was wide and white, the only detail Hitori could see in his blurry shadow. "Alas I have been discovered, although this can be a great benefit to the both of us, Hitori. You have grown in strength, and I believe the fire can pass on. My strength wears thin and is slowly ebbing away, as it has been for the last century. I believe I have found the next." His grin widened. It was almost frightening.
What are you talking about? Hitori asked, annoyed.
"You will see in time Hitori. I have some strength yet, and you still need training. From what I've seen, you have two very able mentors available, both willing to teach you. Use them."
Hitori awoke in a hospital bed, staring up at the cracked, mouldy ceiling. He made no movements, quickly realising where he is, and that he may be unstable. He instead pondered on the occurrence which transpired in his mind. Was it real? It must have been. He knew it was. But what really made him wonder was why Sasaki wouldn't tell him how he died.
How strange. He thought to himself. Perhaps I will meet him again one day. I will make him answer my questions. Who was it...? Sasaki.
"Hm? What is it?" Hitori's eyes widened as the voice echoed in his mind. Sasaki? He thought slowly.
"It seems we can communicate after all. This will prove useful, no doubt. Though I worry..." His thoughts were left unfinished. "How is this possible?" Hitori thought, speaking outloud without realising.
"I am unsure. Perhaps you are just very compatible?"
"With what??" He thought and said once more.
"It matters not. I said before that you have two mentors. You now have three. Heed my words carefully, Hitori. I will not always be here."
Hitori nodded and confirmed both verbally and mentally, no doubt drawing the attention from hospital nurses. He knew he had a voice in his head, but now he knew precisely who it was and why. Well, sort of why. He also knew that his mother was the same. But what Hitori took heed of the most was Sasaki's warning. He said Hitori would be next, though didn't quite understand what he meant. Not then.
Ch. 6 - From darkness he emerges - Strength through adversity (Hitori age 16)
"When the fires dwindle, and the voices fade, the silence grows to scream, a new strength is born."
Two years had passed since Hitori's discovery of his mind companion. He had been a genin for quite a time now. His skills had progressed phenomenally with the guidance of Sasaki's wisdom, and his new sensei's advice and training. His skills were especially fluent in Ninjutsu and Kenjutsu, to Sasaki's delight, although his kenjutsu somewhat clumsy; Hitori had great core strength but very little discipline.
The understanding of his second mind helped push Hitori through his social barriers. He found himself stringing full sentences together for strangers, and was eventually perceived as socially adequate, somehow. He had become self-aware. He knew his flaws and strengths. The gift of hindsight allowed Hitori to observe his past as an academy student. He knew exactly why the others would pick on him. Hitori was always so cold to people; never giving the satisfaction of full answers, sometimes even completely ignoring people. He still had these attributes, though he was working on them.
Hitori grew as a shinobi in many aspects; he took part in many D and C rank missions in squads, though he worked better alone. Incredibly, Hitori's strength actually surpassed many other genin. It was from this point that Hitori's true strength and potential revealed itself to him and a select few jounin in Kirigakure.
In an especially dangerous mission of which Hitori took part in, events transpired which ultimately resulted in Hitori's inner strength being released. His mind was somehow calm, though his body felt intense. Unknown to him, Hitori did not look himself. a sharp blue chakra enveloped his body as he fought his opponents. Unknown to him, Hitori no longer heard the voice of the jinchuuriki. Unknown to him, Hitori was now the true jinchuuriki.
Once the danger was no longer present, and he was certain of safety; Hitori collapsed from exhaustion and slept for a week in a mouldy hospital bed in Kirigakure.
He had terrible nightmares of a large dark wolf standing on its hind legs, wielding Hitori's nodachi with a wicked grin. It was covered thickly in mud and blood, it's large baring teeth tainted with flesh and rot. A storm grew wild as wind and rain belted at his body. The wolf was Hitori, he knew. When he awoke in a cold sweat, the voice was gone. His only friend. His only guide. Hitori could no longer rely on Sasaki. The silence in his mind grew into a scream, though a new strength was born.
Ch. 7 - The truth of the fact - A father forgotten (Hitori age 1)
"Pain is unavoidable, despair lives long, new starts give delay, but the past will catch up."
A tall, rugged man sat drunk at a bar. His thick black beard heavily disguised his tired and lined face. A year had passed since his beloved's death. Jakuren was haunted by the ghosts of his memories past, although one was not quite a ghost. The memory, the knowledge of what he did was a pestilence in his mind, deteriorating his soul and very being into the sad excuse of an ex-shinobi that sat in his very seat.
It was now his daily routine to sit, drink, and feel remorse. Remorse for his lost wife, an abandoned son and the optimism he once felt for his life within a new family. He stared into his empty glass and asked for another through slurred speech and vague body language. He was given a temporary dismissal from duty as a shinobi when word got out that his wife had been murdered during a robbery. It was meant to be a few months, however they did not know the whole of it. Jakuren often thought that they would lock him up or execute him if they knew the truth.
The barman pushed a large, dirty mug of beer into Jakuren's hand. He then lingered to probe for answers as to why Jakuren sat defeated at his bar so regularly. He did this every day. That day, however, was the day Jakuren would finally answer. It had been a year exactly. Jakuren was ready to share, knowing exactly what may happen as a result.
He sat forward on the stool and stared the barman in the eyes. He was ready to share.
~~~
As Jakuren held Hitoko's dead body in his arms, he felt the presence of another. He saw his newborn son lay sprawling in a bundle of cloth and was shocked and relieved that he still had his son. He soon realised that the presence he felt was not him. He held Hitoko tightly as he felt his body pull, though not an ordinary pull. His body remained where it was, but his very essence and soul were dragged from his mind. He found himself sitting in a serene forest full of spring trees in full bloom. Jakuren's very first thought was that he had been trapped in a jutsu. He wasn't too far off.
He looked down into his hands and saw only a pure white silhouette of where the corpse of his wife lay. Jakuren looked around at his surroundings. The forest, although peaceful and in full bloom, was completely lifeless. There was no buzzing of insects, no chirping from birds in their nest. Jakuren couldn't even see a cloud in the sky. Leaves were slowly falling from the trees, one by one, autumn's fall during spring.
He then questioned his state of mind, and was convinced that he had broken from the emotional impact of finding his wife murdered. Jakuren almost jumped when he realised he was staring face-to-face with a large man clad heavily in dark shining armour. It was an image he would see centuries ago, however this felt very real to him. Their stare was absolute and was held in silence for what seemed an eternity. It was Jakuren who broke the silence.
Who are you?
I am Sasaki, a Jinchuuriki from centuries past. My mind was bound to your wife, Hitoko. With her death I am now in a predicament. Without someone to tie myself to, my spirit will die and the seven tailed wolf will be free. Sasaki answered to the point, and very bluntly.
Jakuren considered for a moment, then shook his head dismissively. It was certain. Jakuren had lost his mind.
And you want to seal yourself to me?
No. We are not compatible, and your mind too unstable and tainted. Your son, however... He shares the blood as Hitoko.
No. Jakuren refused. He did not know what the man was talking about, but he was certain that he didn't want his son involved.
It must be so. You will do this for me, else the beast will be free. It will roam without a jinchuuriki and will tear down villages, burn down forests, salt crops and will sink land. It must be so.
Jakuren shook his head frantically. There must be another! My son, my only son, he is too young.
There is noone else compatible. Your son will be safe, I will ensure such. This needs to be done now, Jakuren.
Another long silence ensued. Jakuren's mind was blank, however furiously at work at the same time. He struggled with the occurrence, however eventually he grasped the reality of the situation.
Jakuren knew the words to be true. He was a fuuinjutsuist, after all.
How will this affect his life? He asked hesitantly. Jakuren had resigned. He knew it must be done, it was as Sasaki had said. He didn't want to believe it and therefore needed the man known as Sasaki to convince him. To tell him it will be alright.
He will be unaffected. Your wife could hear my thoughts occasionally. That is all. She never knew I existed. In fact, I protected her at some points in her life. I can do the same for your son. But you need to bind me to him now.
Jakuren's hesitation was drawn out and painful. He could feel the hot tears roll down his cheeks. As if he didn't suffer through enough already, his only child would soon be tainted with another mind.
Reluctantly, he nodded. I will do it.
With those words, Jakuren found himself holding his child in his defiled home. Somehow he had moved from his wife's corpse to his son's wet, bloody body.
He knew what he had to do. It was forbidden, however Jakuren was a shinobi and had strong beliefs. He often took the matter into his own hands, and despite the fact that it may result in his banishment or death, Jakuren followed through. The idea of execution wasn't too terrible for him. He knew what must be done. Jakuren was going to perform a forbidden technique in a most forbidden circumstance. Certainly he had to hide his son, too, for his own safety, else the soul of Sasaki would be extracted. That would prove more dangerous than the sealing itself.
He cleaned his son from the birth and dried him off, taking his time to do so. His eyes were full of tears as he knew this would be the last time he was to see his son. He then took a quill and ink from his ninja pouch and began inking a seal on his crying son's stomach. It took over an hour to complete. The seal was elaborate and detailed, once he had finished Jakuren performed a great deal of handsigns before placing them over his son's stomach.
His son screamed loudly. The jutsu was done.
Jakuren hurried the newborn into a bundle of cloth and left it at a distant neighbours home with a note; "Hitori". The people in that particular village were very kind, and would no doubt raise his son, Hitori, into a fine man.
~~~
So there he sat as a drunkard, regretting now how he let his son go. How he would never see him again. He abandoned his only child. In hindsight, Jakuren knew that he never wanted to be a father. What really defeated Jakuren? That very village was plundered again, a few months afterwards. Every home was burnt down.
Description Hitori's hard face and sharp details often gives a poor impression of a thug or tormentor. He is quite tall for his age, standing at 5'11", however is slim and toned. Hitori's messy dark hair brings out his yellow eyes, seemingly peering suspiciously.
Personality Hitori is quite standoffish. He speaks to the point and often remains silent. He would much prefer to be alone than in a large group, or so it would seem. Despite his offputting first impression, Hitori sometimes will show acts of kindness from sheer instinct, although would only do so if he thinks noone will notice.
Notable Traits Hitori often grinds his teeth. Hitori barely looks people in the eye. Hitori sometimes will mutter to himself.
Dislikes Crowds, Noisy people, Cruelty, Storms, Human Contact, Starvation, Death (fear of dying), Being alone (also likes it)

He killed some Kumo shinobi for good reason, and to keep relations healthy, Kirigakure have kicked him out. I don't fucking agree. Darius is the closest thing to family I've ever had.) A.H Hoshigaki - 9 (My squad mate. She's pretty fuckin' tough. I can count on her to watch my back. With Darius gone, she's the only friend I have in Kirigakure.) Etsuko Kag'ame - 7 (Etsuko. Probably the strongest person I've met. I'm not sure where she's from or why she teaches me, but I appreciate it.) Mina Kag'ame - 7 (Her name's Mina. She's a quiet girl, kind-hearted I can tell. She's the daughter of Etsuko.) Hirui - 6 (Hirui's a chef or something. He taught me a few tricks that will no doubt come in handy, though maybe not completely necessary.) Azumi Hyuuga - 5 (RIVAL) (Hyuuga. She's strong. Young, probably like 12. I fought her once. I had to forfeit. Sasaki wouldn't let me hit her when I had her stunned. I want to fight her again someday.) Hiroshi Uchiha - 5 (RIVAL) (The Uchiha. He's apparently the strongest genin in Konoha. I've only seen him briefly. I haven't seen his strength yet.) Senri - 5 (Senri, a Konoha genin. I don't know too many Konoha shinobi. He's okay. Decent strength. He strikes me as a thinker.) Kinnojo - 6 (Kin. Darius killed him. A real shame. I liked Kin. There is one less honourable shinobi from Kumo.) Yashanny Hoshigaki - 7 (KIA) (He fucking died. Apparently it was because of Kumo's poor decisions during a mission.)

Description Shizukana is the least known of all the Biju, likely due to her disappearance for the last three century. She takes the form of a great white wolf with seven tails. Her size alternates between large, her sitting position as tall as an average man, to enormous, much the same size as all Biju. The disappearance of Shizukana alongside her Jinchuuriki led people to believe they were dead, although those wiser knew differently.
Shizukana is historically known to be demanding of her Jinchuuriki in terms of the actions they take, especially in decisions which may lead to their death, mostly from doubt of human strength. Before she was sealed into Sasaki, Shizukana roamed the lands in her smaller form, primarily sticking to lands with thick forests and woods. It was centuries ago when Shizukana raised chaos in grass country, purging villages and farms. During an attack on a larger village, Shizukana was captured by early shinobi who sealed her in secret into a man known as Sasaki.
Sasaki was a roaming ronin who had exceptional skills in the ninja arts, however his true skills were in Fuinjutsu. When it was presumed Sasaki died, he in fact sealed his intangible existance into another. Admittedly, his physical body had been destroyed, however he could not yet die, else Shizukana would live on and roam once more. From thereon, Sasaki moved from life to life, trying to find a reliable host for the great white wolf.
Although she was presumed dead, Shizukana was hunted for annually by those who lived in Grass country in a 'great white wolf hunt'. This eventuated into something of a tradition centuries later, where hunters of grass country would venture out to kill the biggest wolf in the surrounding forests, although it was folk lore that the great white wolf still roamed their forests.
ACN: Plasma Release (Lightning + Fire) Plasma Release can occur as a result of combining lightning and fire chakra. Plasma release refers to the release of energized gas, however can be used in many forms. It's physical form takes a similar appearance to green fire or purple lightning. Monohoshi Zao (Item):
Monohoshi Zao (Laundry Drying Pole) 75 Tokens (initial)
History The Monohoshi Zao was wielded by a long forgotten Japanese samurai by the name of Sasaki Kojiro many centuries ago. Sasaki was a widely known swordsman who excelled in the use of his Nodachi named Monohoshi Zao. His skills with the nodachi were unrivalled, however what drew the most interest in Sasaki was his ability in fuinjutsu. Sasaki's strength as a swordsman was hugely due to the seals he placed on his famed Nodachi, which enormously enhanced its power. It was rumoured that Sasaki grew so attached to his Nodachi, sometimes servants would hear him whisper to it when he thought he was alone.
Many samurai and ronin would challenge Sasaki when hearing of his strength, yet failed to best him. Despite the cumbersome size of Monohoshi Zao, Sasaki could wield it with incredible speed, beating the strongest warriors across many lands and countries. As Sasaki's victories increased so did his fame. He was eventually named 'Ganryu', which was his fighting style (Large Rock Style).
Many decades passed with Sasaki holding the unofficial title of strongest swordsman. The years sadly did not do well to Sasaki's mental health. He would speak to himself often sometimes become greatly agitated, there were those who claimed to have heard him scream in the night. Sasaki's strength grew with his madness. He never lost a fight. It wasn't until another from a different land working under a no-name Daimyo challenged Sasaki that the title was lost. This young swordsman named Miyamoto challenged Sasaki to a duel and requested to choose the location, declaring that he is confident that he could beat Sasaki with only a bokken.
Sasaki, insulted by the challenge, grew angry and accepted the duel with intentions of humiliating the boy. The fight took place in a large forest where no spectators would see. In an unfortunate turn of events, Sasaki blinded by his rage, charged Miyamoto with Monohoshi Zao using his strongest technique, failing to consider the little space which the environment allowed. The nodachi slashed into a tree, failing to reach its target, while Miyamoto's bokken delivered a sharp, fatal strike to Sasaki's head.
The forest in which the fight took place was devastated by the misaimed strike. It was said that the forest now has a clearing from where Monohoshi Zao's strike fell. Since then the nodachi had been lost for centuries; for better or worse, many didn't know of Monohoshi Zao's strength, and never took up a search to find it. Earth and vegetation grew over the deadliest weapon as it aged and remained forgotten, until it was later found by a young boy from the ninja village Kirigakure, named Hitori Kikken.
Unsure how he found it, or why in fact he even felt the need to take a rusted old sword, Hitori claimed it as his own, the second voice rather pleased with the discovery, murmuring to him; "At last we are together again, Monohoshi Zao...".
Description Monohoshi Zao has many appearances. It's most primal and core appearance clearly shows it's age with a chipped blade, rotting grip and rusted metals. The Monohoshi Zao however is unusually lengthy for a Nodachi, almost five feet, twice as long as the standard. The 'true' form of Monohoshi Zao with its full potential unlocked clears the rust and rot, giving the Nodachi a sleek black shine. The main feature of the Monohoshi Zao are the four separate runes embedded in the blade's surface. Each rune has its own distinct colour and shape. A yellow, red, blue and black rune each holds significant power within the Nodachi.
Yellow Rune 80 Tokens (additional) The first rune is a yellow & sharp diamond shape on the blade's surface has been engraved with the word "Zanninna". The Zanninna rune unlocks Monohoshi's destructive potential. Upon the unlocking of this rune, Monohoshi's chipped blade is no longer present, instead offering Hitori with the sharpest steel possible.
Red Rune 60 Tokens (additional) The Red Rune is circular and is embedded in the second spot on the sword's blade. "Karada" is written in the surface. The Karada rune unlocks the vitality and health potential of the sword and wielder. With this rune, Monohoshi metal becomes much denser, turning a dark black, the rust no longer present.
Blue Rune 65 Tokens (additional) The Third rune is oval and blue. It has the word "Seishin" engraved in its surface. The Seishin rune unlocks Monohoshi's spiritual and chakra aspects, granting the use of the blade's chakra reserve. Additionally, Monohoshi absorbs Hitori's chakra with ease, allowing him to utilise the blade to assist in performing jutsu.
Black Rune 100 Tokens (additional, needs Y, R & B) The final rune on the blade is square in shape and is black in colour, although slightly transparent. The word "Nijuu" is engraved deeply into the rune. The Nijuu rune unlocks Monohoshi Zao's truest potential, allowing Hitori to wield the blade with skill surpassing that of Sasaki Kojiro. A deep connection is re-established between Hitori's second mind and the Nodachi, restoring Monohoshi Zao to its complete former strength. Upon unlocking this final rune, Monohoshi's full potential is finally unlocked. The entire blade no longer appears aged or chipped, instead has a slick black surface and uniquely has a feint black glow when wielded.

Roleplay: The monohoshi Zao can only be wielded by Hitori and is completely inseparable. When not in contact with Hitori's being the Nodachi turns into an ethereal state, unable to be physically moved by anything. Cost: 2 CP Maintain per use Dicefight: A second attack roll with a -3 to hit is made dealing ordinary kenjutsu dmg, receiving no dmg to bonus. Note: Second attack occurs every turn directly after Hitori & cannot crit.
